Serial port not available timeout

The network serial port system seems to work nice and simply except for if the network connection is lost between PCs and the client attempts to open the serial port, the application is hung for about 20 seconds until NT reports the error.  Is this adjustable?  We use a similar hardware product (Digi) and it returns the error immediately.
